Status
The Mediterranean Skipper (G. nostradamus) and Pygmy Skipper (G. pumilio) are extremely similar members of the same genus.
To distinguish these two similar species one needs to look for three diagnostic features:
1) the underside of the hindwing in G. pumilio has clear pale dots set against a brown/grey back ground, this is not the case for the G. nostradamus which has a plane spotless brown/grey ground colour on the underside of it's hind wings.
2) along the costa (front edge) of the hind wing of G. nostradamus there projects a tuft of hair like scales (see Le Franchis) which are not so conspicuous in G. pumilio
3) on the forewings of the female G. nostradamus there are a series of pale spots that are distinct in this species but faint in G. pumilio.
